“I am a self-taught artist named Daniel M. I was born in 1975 and have drawn since I was young in years. When I was a child I lived in New York City. I had time to read and watch old movies and TV shows. I express myself through sculpture, painting, drawing, film, and writing. We all have struggles in life – mine is to create, to be accepted. I feel we live in a world that is anti-art and anti-culture. I would like people to be aware of another world and reality – an afterworld that we can’t explain and that we are joined together after the passing of life. I am inspired by human courage, stories of good versus of evil, the best of humanity, and classic movies and TV shows.
I like to draw natural scenes, famous creatures, things from fantasy and family and people I have known. I am inspired by the art of Thomas Nast, Arthur Rackham and Gustav Dore. I work with acrylic paints, china markers, markers, colored pencils and pastels. I enjoy expressing melancholy, eeriness, the unexplainable, and invisibility in my work. I have a healthy fascination with werewolves, vampires, demonology, ghosts, alien life and outer space, and the old stories of Europe and older America. I would like people to see the majesty of the creatures I create. I like to keep alive all of these mythical creatures and monsters of creation. Creating my work gives me the pleasure of the old movies and TV shows I enjoy watching. I use grand, huge, old-fashioned titles for my artwork which are reminiscent of old books and movies. I do this to take the viewer on a journey.”
Daniel was 1 of 3 selected to participate in our “Advancing the Artist” workshop series where artists learn to create the tools to promote themselves such as websites, resumes, portfolios, social media and more.
